Welcome to the Reading

CARERS WILL HAVE THEIR SAY

A new package of support for carers was announced earlier in the year for Care Services.

The New Deal for Carers will include additional funding for emergency support, a national helpline for carers and an expert carers programme.

The Prime Minister, also announced there would be the most far-reaching consultation ever on future support for carers, as the 1999 National Strategy for Carers is updated.

Carers and past carers are encouraged to take part in the consultation process, which is open until the end of September.

For further information contact Carers UK or visit www.newdealforcarers.org.

Keep Counting Carers

The Census of 2001 included a question on carers. This was the first time ever that carers had ever been mentioned!  The information provided unparalleled reliable knowledge about carers locally and nationally.

Carers UK say it is likely that without more Government support and financial input, the question about carers will be lost in the 2011 Census. The decisions about what to include in the 2011 Census need to be made shortly because it takes so long to prepare.

Please spread the word and encourage people to write to save the question on carers.

Write to the Minister for Carers. This letter is the most critical as the Department of Health can fund the carer question:

Ivan Lewis

MP, Minister for Carers,

Department of Health,

Richmond House,

79 Whitehall, London,  SW1A 2NS.

If possible, also send a copy of the letter to Ian Cope, Census Director, Office for National Statistics, Segensworth R o a d , F a r e h a m , Hampshire, PO15 5RR

and to Karen Dunnell, National Statistician and Registrar, General Office for National Statistics, 1 Drummond Gate, London, SW1V 2QQ.
